Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical Engineering
The MS degree is offered in two modalities: Plan A and Plan B. Plan A is research-oriented, and it consists of a combination of coursework and research, and it requires the writing and defense of a Master’s thesis. Most students working towards a Plan A-MS receive funding via a research assistantship. Plan B consists entirely of coursework. Applicants to the MS program must have a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering
The Ph.D. degree is eminently focused on research and as such, in addition to coursework, requires a substantial amount of research work. The doctoral research work must constitute an original and significant contribution to the field of mechanical, aerospace, and/or manufacturing engineering. The research results in a dissertation that must be defended in public, and in publications in peer-reviewed venues. Applicants may join the Ph.D. program after obtaining an MS degree, or directly after obtaining a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Most students pursuing a Ph.D. degree receive funding in the form of a research assistantship.
